Advocacy efforts are a large part of NAMI Oklahoma's mission to improve the lives of individuals living with mental health conditions and their families. NAMI Oklahoma is an active participant on work groups and committees, as well as an advocate for a public policy agenda to improve mental health services throughout the state, reduce the stigma associated with mental illness, and support effective treatment and recovery programs.
To learn more about NAMI’s stance on advocacy and public policy issues that affect adults and children living with mental illness and their family, read the NAMI Public Policy Platform (PDF).
contact your state legislator
Contacting your legislator is the first step to building a relationship with your elected official so you can effectively communicate the policies that affect mental health programs and treatment services.
There are several ways you can build a relationship with your legislator including scheduling a meeting outside the legislative session to discuss your views on the need for improvements in the state's mental health system. During this time, legislators are usually less busy and more available to meet than when the legislature is in session. You can also reach out to your local affiliate to schedule a meeting together.
