The Dr. R. Murali Krishna Family Eliminate the Stigma Award was developed as a way to honor persons or organizations who have shown an outstanding contribution to the community by eliminating stigma about mental illness and improving the lives of those affected by mental illness.
The 2018 Award Winners are Josh Huestis of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Helen Coffey.
Josh Huestis was recognized because he has been courageous in talking about mental illness and has worked to eliminate stigma. Huestis has used his blog as a platform to start discussion about mental health. He was unable to attend NAMIWalks to accept the award in person but has made this acceptance video.
Helen Coffey is a member of NAMI Edmond - N OKC, a local author and is actively involved in suicide prevention and mental health advocacy efforts. Having lost her own daughter by suicide she has dedicated her time and energy to destigmatizing mental illness so that individuals and families affected by mental health conditions will seek the help they need for wellness and to prevent suicide.
